Appeal after man found with serious injuries, Barnstaple

Police are appealing for witnesses after a man was found with serious head injuries in Barnstaple town centre on Saturday night [2 September].

The 39-year-old Barnstaple man was found lying injured in Church Lane around 9pm by an ambulance crew.

He was taken to North Devon District Hospital but later transferred to Derriford Hospital in Plymouth where he remains in a serious condition.

Police are investigating how the man sustained the injuries and are appealing to anyone who may have witnessed any incident involving him, either in Church Lane or the surrounding area.

Detective Sergeant Steve Bates, of Barnstaple CID, said: “At this stage it is very unclear how the injuries were caused. We are not sure whether the man has fallen down or has been the victim of an assault.

“The town centre would have been busy at that time on a Saturday night so we are appealing to anyone who was in area at the time and witnessed any incident involving this man to contact police.”

Anyone with information is asked to contact police via [email protected] or by phone on 101, quoting reference number EN/015631/17 or log number 0475 of 03/09/17.
