Coventry stand-off comes to an end

Police in Coventry have thanked members of the community for their patience after a 21-hour stand-off between police and a man on the roof of a house came to an end this morning (July 29).

A 23-year-old man has been arrested on recall to prison, criminal damage and assaulting a police officer.

It began when a PC went to make a routine arrest at around 1pm yesterday afternoon (28 July) on William McKee Close in Willenhall but escalated when the 23-year-old locked himself in the attic.

It’s alleged he later made threats to stab officers who were trying to detain him and then emerged on the roof of the house holding a knife.

Specially trained negotiators were at the scene into the early hours attempting to talk the man down.

Two police officers suffered minor injuries after being struck by roof tiles; two police cars were also damaged.

Force Incident Manager Chief Inspector Harvi Khatkar said: “We appreciate the massive impact on the local community and are grateful for their support and patience yesterday and this morning.”
