Elderly woman dies following Barnstaple collision

A 91-year-old woman who died following a collision in Barnstaple on Saturday night [17 December] has been named as Mrs Margaret Pine, who lived locally.

Emergency services were called shortly after 10pm following the single-vehicle collision on the Old Bideford Road near to Birch Lane.

A Diahatsu Move car had been in collision with a brick wall at the end of Old Bideford Road in thick fog.

Three elderly women in the vehicle sustained serious injuries and were all taken to North Devon District Hospital.

Mrs Pine, from Barnstaple, was a passenger in the vehicle and sustained multiple injuries. She died in hospital in the early hours of this morning [20 December].

The other two women, aged 76 and 85 and both from Barnstaple, remain in hospital.

Police from the Serious Collision Investigation Team are appealing for witnesses to this incident and asking for anyone who saw the vehicle travelling prior to the collision to contact them via [email protected] or by telephone on 101, quoting log 948 of 17/12/2016.
