Five arrested after pensioner hit by stone in taxi

Five teenagers have been arrested after an elderly woman was injured by a stone thrown through a taxi window in Birmingham.

On-board footage which showing the stone smash through the glass and hit the passenger in Bellevue Road, Edgbaston, went viral after being released on social media.

The woman, in her 70s, was taken to hospital with a fractured skull after being hit while travelling in a back seat at around 10pm on 25 May.

Police have now arrested five boys, two aged 17 and three aged 15, on suspicion of wounding. They have been bailed pending further enquiries.

Sergeant David Cotter, from the Birmingham South partnerships team, said: “The elderly woman suffered a nasty head injury and officers from force CID and local neighbourhood team carried out a joint operation leading to these arrests.

“We are continuing to investigate the circumstances and further reports of other cars being damaged after stones were thrown that night.

“We increased patrols and neighbourhood officers have continued to provide support and reassurance to residents in the area.”
