Police have launched an investigation after a woman was violently attacked in Victoria Park in Leicester.
The woman, in her 20s, was found in bushes, near to the recycling bins off Victoria Park Road, at around 12.40am today (Tuesday 4 July) and taken to hospital with very serious injuries. She is described as being in a critical condition.
Police believe the attack happened at around 11.40pm last night.
Crime Scene Investigators are conducting a detailed examination of the scene where the woman was found and a large area of the park has been cordoned off.
Detective Chief Inspector Rob Widdowson, who is leading the investigation, said: “This was an horrific assault and has left a young woman in an extremely serious condition in hospital.
“We urgently need to trace anyone who may have been in the area of Victoria Park late last night or in the early hours today and who may have seen something which can help us identify the person or people responsible for this terrible attack.
“I have a dedicated team of detectives working on the investigation and carrying out a number of lines of enquiry, including speaking to potential witnesses and looking through CCTV, but I need the public’s help.
“I need to speak to anyone who was in the park between 11.30pm yesterday and 12.40am today.
“Did you see the assault take place? Did you see anyone loitering? Or did you see anyone walking, running, or cycling through?
“You may not think what you saw is significant, but we still want to speak to you.”
Anyone with any information about the assault is asked to call Leicestershire Police on 101 and quote incident 17*282095.
