Man sentenced to five years for knife attack

A 30-year-old Loughborough man who stabbed the manager of a car wash has been sentenced to more than five years in prison.

Shamal Osmani, of Lymehurst Avenue, Loughborough, stabbed the victim in an unprovoked attack at his place of work in Coneries Street, Loughborough, following an argument over a car parking payment.

Yesterday (11 February), when his trial was due to start at Lincoln Crown Court, he pleaded guilty to grievous bodily harm with intent and was sentenced to five years and four months in prison.

On the day of the incident, 30 March 2017, Osmani approached the victim at the car wash asking if he could park his car on the site.

The victim agreed, providing Osmani paid the staff for parking when he returned. When he came to collect the car he assaulted the victim.

The defendant then left the scene but came back a few minutes later with another man. As the victim attempted to drive off his car was attacked, forcing him to get out of the vehicle.

Osmani then lunged towards the victim with a knife, stabbing him in the chest and back. The victim managed to escape and barricade himself in his office until police arrived.

Detective Constable Gemma Dempsey investigated the incident. She said: “Osmani’s actions were totally unnecessary and unprovoked. He attacked the victim with a knife, leaving him with serious injuries. He has since recovered physically but the attack will live with him forever.

“Carrying and using a knife is a serious offence and the defendant now faces a lengthy prison sentence for his actions on that day.

“Knife crime is among the force’s priorities and our successful ‘Lives Not Knives’ campaign has been supported by many partners since it was first launched. Among the proactive work adopted as part of this campaign has been to educate young people in schools and through youth engagement activities that carrying a knife is not a status symbol and comes with serious consequences.”
