A 29-year-old man who was taken ill at the scene of an armed robbery in Market Street, Ashby, has died in hospital this morning (Saturday 15 July).
Police were called just after 10pm on Thursday to reports of two men entering a store and threatening staff with a baseball bat and golf club, and demanding cash.
One of the suspects made off in a vehicle which was waiting outside the store.
Another suspect was apprehended in the street by members of the public. Officers attended and the 29-year-old old man was arrested in connection with the robbery but became ill and was taken to Nottingham’s Queen’s Medical Centre.
His death is being treated as unexplained and a post-mortem examination will take place in due course.
The Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) is carrying out an independent investigation into police involvement in his death.
Enquiries are continuing into the robbery.
