Inspector Manjit Atwal will today (Monday 5 June) take over the reins at the central Leicester neighbourhood policing area.
She will replace Inspector Simon Preston, who has been in charge for the past three-and-a-half years.
Insp Atwal has been with the force since 1996 – starting out her career at Welford Road Police Station. Throughout her service she has served in both neighbourhood and response policing roles as well as working with the city Youth Offending Service.
She said: “I am excited and honoured to be taking on the role of City Neighbourhood Policing Commander. I’m looking forward to the challenges ahead and working with the great team here.”
Insp Preston is moving to take up a new role at Keyham Lane police station.
He said: “During my time in the city I was privileged to welcome the Her Majesty the Queen on two occasions, be there for the burial of King Richard III and Leicester City Football club parading the streets as Premiership champions.
“These things are not going to happen again.
“Serving in the city has been varied, enjoyable, and at times challenging, but I would not change any of it.
“Leicester is a diverse city which welcomes communities from across the world. It is testament to the people of Leicester that it has been a privilege to serve them and help keep them safe.
“I wish Manjit all the best in her new role.”
