Over 100 children in Gwent to take part in MOY this summer

This summer, over a 100 Year 8 children in Gwent have been selected to take part in MOY.

MOY, which stands for Motivating Our Youth, is part of the All Wales School Liaison Core Programme and is funded by the Police and Crime Commissioner for Gwent and led by Gwent School Community Police Officers (SCPOs) in partnership with the Youth Service, YOS and Positive Futures.

This is the third year that MOY has taken place in Gwent, providing opportunities for young people to develop key social skills and positive relationships through a mixture of team building activities and learning. One of the main areas MOY looks to develop is increasing self-esteem and confidence. Young people have the opportunity to take on tasks and activities that they haven’t tried before, giving them a sense of achievement and new found confidence.

The Police and Crime Commissioner for Gwent, Jeff Cuthbert, said: “I am pleased to continue to support children throughout Gwent taking part in these constructive and positive activities during the school holiday period. With the support of Police Officers, the All Wales School Liaison Core Programme provides pupils with the opportunity to learn a great deal about safety. This will remain a priority for policing and preventing crime in Gwent and is a prime example of how the police and schools can work together to help young people stay safe.”

Gwent is split into four areas for MOY;

· Newport
· Caerphilly
· Blaenau Gwent and North Monmouthshire
· Torfaen and South Monmouthshire

Each week, those involved take part in the set timetable…

Monday: Team building at Big Pit
Tuesday and Wednesday: Outdoor fun at Bryn Back Park, including; gorge walking, mountain biking, canoeing and archery
Thursday and Friday: Cardiff Bay, white-water rafting, surfing and ice skating

As well as giving the young people exciting activities on which to focus their energies, essential life skills are developed such as team working, communication and organisation skills.
