Pedestrian named following fatal collision in Walsall

Police investigating a fatal non-stop traffic collision in Walsall have today named the elderly man who died.

John Hickinbottom, aged 74, from Willenhall, died after being struck by a black BMW in Bentley Road North at the traffic island leading to Bentley Table.

The crash took place at 2.30pm Friday 9 June as Mr Hickinbottom walked towards Darlaston. He was taken to hospital but sadly died on Monday 12 June.

Sergeant Alan Wood from the Regional Collision investigation Unit, said: “The black BMW overturned during the collision and came to rest on its roof. The occupants of the car then left the scene.. Investigations are on-going but we are asking for any witnesses who have not already come forward to contact us.”

He added, “A number of witnesses stopped at the scene and attempted to assist Mr Hickinbottom before emergency services arrived, they have also supplied valuable information about the circumstances of the collision, but I would encourage anyone else who may have information about the incident to come forward.”

The family of John have released the following statement “John Hickinbottom was a very kind, loving and caring man. He was a loving father, grandfather and great grandfather. His loss has devastated the whole family.”

The family of John are being supported by specialist officers and ask that their privacy is respected at this time.

A 29-year-old man was arrested in connection with the collision and has been released pending investigation.
